The Mavericks Men’s Swim and Dive Team finished day one of the Division II National Championships in fifth place with 74 points.
The women’s team finished day one with 24 points and are in 15 place out of 26 teams at the championships.
Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) women’s team was disqualified from the first event of the finals on day one. The Maverick’s 200-yard medley relay team was disqualified leaving them with zero points.
The men’s 200-yard medley relay team made up of freshman Ben Sampson, freshman Dejan Urbanek, seniors Mahmoud Elgayar and Lane Austin took sixth place. They finished with a time of 1:27.00 to earn 26 points.
Junior Amelia Kinnard finished in the middle of the pack in the 1000-yard freestyle event and placed 20 out of 40 swimmers. Kinnard was the only CMU swimmer in the women’s event and finished with a time of 10:19.88 which was just .37 hundredths of a second behind Jessie Tobin who finished in 19 place.
Senior Lily Borgenheimer was the lone Maverick swimmer in the women’s 200-yard individual medley. She placed fifth in the race posting a time of 2:01.17 and earned 14 points with her efforts.
Sampson was in the consolation final in the men’s 200-yard individual medley and took second in the race. Sampson placed 10 overall in the event with a time of 1:46.41 and finished just .26 hundredths of a second behind JT Amrein in ninth.
CMU had two divers place in the top six of the men’s one-meter diving event. Junior Isaiah Cheeks took fourth place in the event as he finished with 440.55 points to earn 15 points for the Mavericks. Senior Noah Luna finished with 424.35 points to take sixth place in the event.
The Maverick’s women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team ended the day strong by earning their team 10 points with a 12 place finish. The team made up of sophomore Isabel Powers, junior Ruby Bottai, senior Logan Anderson and redshirt senior Julie Day finished with a time of 1:33.89.
CMU’s men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team took 13 place with a time of 1:20.33. The team was made up of sophomore Mohamed Elkady, junior Felipe D’Orsi, Austin and Sampson and they earned the Mavericks eight points with their finish.
Day two of the NCAA D2 Championships prelims start at 9:00 a.m. with the finals starting at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.
