The Mavericks down the Mountain Lions

Taylor Jakeman scored a game-high seven goals to lead the Mavericks to a 19-15 win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

The Mavericks scored 11 goals in the second half against the Mountain Lions to close out their 19-15 win.  

Redshirt sophomore attacker Taylor Jakeman scored a game-high seven goals on nine shots in the game. She scored five of her seven goals in the second half.  

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) dominated the draw control circle in the game as they won 25 of the 38 draws in the game. The Mavericks went four for 11 on free-position shots and they scored five goals on the extra-man opportunity.  

The game was tied at eight going into the second half, but Jakeman broke the tie just over a minute and a half into the third quarter. Regan Olsen came back with a goal of her own with 11:37 remaining in the third quarter to tie the game up at nine.  

Both teams traded goals, but the Mavericks got the final say of the quarter as redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis scored with 7:04 left in the third quarter to put CMU up 11-10.

Jakeman put the Mavericks up by two goals with 12:44 left in the game as she scored a one-timer goal off an assist from redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS) came back with a two-goal run of their own to tie the game at 12 with 9:21 left in the game.  

Jakeman came back with her fifth goal of the game to put the Mavericks up by one 11 seconds later. Julia Patrick answered with a goal for UCCS with 8:49 left in the game on a free-position shot to tie the game at 13.  

Redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz and Jakeman went on a two-goal run for the Mavericks to take a 15-13 lead with 7:04 remaining in the game. The Mountain Lions came back with a two-goal run of their own to score their final goals of the game to tie the game at 15.  

Three different players scored the Maverick’s final four goals in the game all on man-up opportunities. Audrey Napp, Natalie Church and Julia Patrick all received yellow cards for UCCS in the final five minutes of the game.  

The Mavericks had three different players register four points in the game. Redshirt sophomore attacker Brianna Anderson, freshman midfielder Ali Bryant and Wentz scored four points in the Maverick’s win.  

CMU narrowly finished with the advantage in the ground ball battle as they picked up 27 ground balls to UCCS’s 24. The Mavericks also outshot the Mountain Lions 39 to 28 in the game.  

The Maverick’s next game is Wednesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. against Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
