The Mavericks dominate in their final road game of the regular season

The Mavericks had 14 different players record at least one point in their 18-4 win over the Thunderwolves.

The Mavericks pull off a dominant win in their final road game of the regular season as they beat the Thunderwolves 18-4.  

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) controlled the ground ball battle in the game as they picked up 19 ground balls compared to the Thunderwolves’ nine. The Mavericks caused 21 of the Thunderwolves’ 32 turnovers in the game.

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis led the game in scoring with six points in the game. Davis scored four goals on six shots on goal, and she dished out two assists in CMU’s win.  

Jacqueline Deandrea picked up a yellow card 13 seconds into the game for Colorado State University-Pueblo. The card set up redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz to score the first goal of the game on an extra-man opportunity with 13:54 remaining in the first quarter.  

Redshirt sophomore attacker Brianna Anderson scored on another extra-man opportunity off an assist from redshirt sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman with 9:53 left in the first quarter. Jakeman put the Mavericks up 3-0 just 40 seconds later as she cut through the defense, caught a pass and finished in the top left corner off an assist from redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans.  

Davis gave the Mavericks a 6-0 lead with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter off of Evan’s third assist of the quarter. Emily Eller scored Colorado State University-Pueblo’s lone goal of the quarter with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter. 

Sedona Sargent brought CSUP within four goals as she got the scoring started in the second quarter. Freshman midfielder Ali Bryant answered with a goal for the Mavericks with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter as she dodged to her left, got through the defense and fired a shot past Annika Ponse.  

Redshirt junior midfielder Ashton Whittle put the Mavericks up 8-2 with 3:40 left in the first half off an assist from freshman attacker Caroline Ohngemach. Davis and Evans added a goal each for CMU to go up 10-2 going into the halftime break.  

Freshman attacker Brooke Vafi started the scoring in the second half with 12:03 remaining in the third quarter in a one-on-one situation with Ponse off an assist from Jakeman. Eller answered with a goal of her own to score the Thunderwolves’ third goal of the game.  

Redshirt senior midfielder Nici Boutwell put CMU up 12-3 off an assist from Davis with 8:58 remaining in the game. Davis came back a minute later to put CMU up by 10 and initiated the running-clock rule which remained the rest of the game.

Vafi and Davis added two more goals for CMU in the third quarter to put them up 15-3 going into the final quarter of action.  

Sophomore attacker Elizabeth Renken started the scoring in the fourth quarter to put the Mavericks up 16-3 as she performed a question mark dodge to fire a shot into the back of the net. Sophomore attacker Amber Wennerstrom put CMU up by 14 goals with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter. 

Sargent scored the final goal of the game for CSUP with 3:07 remaining in the game. Redshirt sophomore attacker Xcaret Salvador came back with the final goal of the game to give the Mavericks up 18-4.  

CMU outshot CSUP as the Mavericks took 49 shots in the game compared to the 14 for the Thunderwolves. The Mavericks put 37 of their 49 shots on goal. 

Evans was the Maverick’s second-leading scorer with five points and picked up one ground ball. She scored one goal and recorded four assists in the game which gives her 25 assists on the season. 

The Maverick’s next game is Thursday, April 28 at 5:00 p.m. against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs to begin the final homestand of the regular season.
