The Mavericks dominate in the pool

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) got off to a great start in their biggest meet so far this season. 

The A3 Invitational is what the swim teams like to call their midterms of the season and is the place where they are truly tested. On the first day of the Invitational, the Mavericks set some very hard to beat times. 

The meet started off strong for the women as both CMU medley relay teams set school records. Junior Lauren White, senior Lily Borgenheimer, junior Davy Brown and sophomore Izzy Powers got first place with a time of 1:42. Sophomore Katerina Matoskova, junior Emily Moreland, senior Anna Barjenbruch and senior Logan Anderson got third with a time of 1:45. 

Junior Amelia Kinnard set a school record for herself as she was able to complete the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:21. Senior Robyn Naze finished in third with a 10:39 time. 

The Mavericks pulled out another first place finish in the first day of the meet in the women’s 800 yard freestyle relay as well. The team consisted of White, Matoskova, senior Kelsey Wright and junior Ruby Bottai. They swam the race in 7:29. 

The women’s team finished on top with 2014 points over the other five schools competing here in Grand Junction, Colo. 

On the men’s side of things, the team started off strong as well. In their 200 yard medley the Mavericks were able to finish first and second. Sophomore Ben Sampson, senior Mahmoud Elgayar, freshman Dajan Urbanek and junior Felipe D’Orsi finished first giving the Mavericks another school record with a time of 1:27. 

Senior Lane Austin, junior Matt Barrett, senior Trevor Wertz and sophomore Mado Elkady finished second.

 In the men’s next event the Mavericks finished first,second, third, as sophomore Gavin Anderson finished first in the 100 yard freestyle. Freshman Jacob Troscher finished right behind him in second place and then freshman Steffen Teutsch placed third. 

CMU went one,two again in the 800 yard relay. 

Junior Matheus Laperriere, freshman Kuba Kiszczak, senior Logan Ellis, and freshman John Walgast finished first in front of Anderson, Elgayar freshman Jeremy Koch and freshman Zach Hartman. 

CMU men’s team finished in first after day one with 224 points. 

Both of the Mavericks swim teams will be back in the pool Thursday morning as the morning session begins at 10 a.m. The evening session will begin at 5 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.
