The best of fall sports

The Mavericks are locked in.

It has been a little over a month since school and sports have started at Colorado Mesa University (CMU). So we decided to take a look at the best athletic performances from the first month of the Fall Sport season.

Volleyball

CMU volleyball has started off the season on a good note going 9-4 in their first 13 games of the season. Redshirt freshman setter Sabrina VanDeList has continued her dominant start that she had in the spring. VanDeList leads the team with 458 assists on the season. She has also become a solid defender picking up 106 digs and 14 blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Sydney Leffler earned a starting position on the left side and continues to prove why she belongs there. Leffler has already hit a collegiate career high of 22 kills of the season against Metro State University- Denver on Sept. 16.

If Leffler continues her domination and high numbers throughout the season I could see her being named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Freshman of the Year.

Football

Under second year Head Coach Tremaine Jackson, the Mavericks football team is off to a very good and solid start at 3-1. They have been put to the test early with facing RMAC opponents Chadron State College and Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Redshirt freshman Karst Hunter has started all four games for the maroon and white and has proved that the work he put in over the summer and fall camp was all worth it. Hunter has been strong in the passing and rushing game as he has thrown for 1015 yards.

Hunter had a dominating performance in the teams win against New Mexico Highlands as he threw for a season high 314 yards with three touchdown passes. On the running end of Hunter’s game he has become stronger throughout the season as he has rushed for 65 yards twice.

The defense has really bought into the new defensive system that the coaching staff has put in place for this season. They have only allowed 76 points through four games.

Men’s and Women’s soccer

The Men’s and Women’s soccer teams have both proven why they were in the conference tournament during the spring season as they continue to beat ranked and tough opponents.

Starting with the men’s team, they only added to what they had going for the last season making them a force in the conference before the season even started. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Connor Durant has been a great edition in front of the goal as well.

Redshirt sophomore Alec Fronapfel has continued to be quick and energetic on the field giving the team an extra weapon when he is given the ball. He has scored five times for CMU.

The Mavericks have been able to play strong and aggressive offense making them a tough team to beat. They have shown that they can play with the top teams in Division Two as they have beaten two ranked teams.

The women’s team has only lost one game in their first six of the season. They have started off with a really strong starting line up that features Freshman forward Lila Dere continues to be strong on the offensive end by already having five goals on the season. Defensively the Mavericks have only allowed seven goals.
