Nick Weems, a standing senior at CMU, is one of the many hard-working student leaders on campus. He is juggling between his academic, extracurricular and internship responsibilities while maintaining his high GPA and an active social life.

Weems is graduating this upcoming spring with a bachelor’s degree in business marketing with a concentration in mass communications. His immense involvement and work experience has brought him to new heights.

He has been involved with the Criterion since his freshman year, and has served as the paper’s photo editor for two years. He has also worked with the events staff on campus for three years.

Last semester, Weems was accepted into Queen’s College in New York through the National Student Exchange Program and spent half of his Junior year in the ‘big apple.’ There he was able to intern with a professional yoga instructor, Kristin McGee, who has appeared on MTV, “The Today Show” and more. He ran her marketing materials and was in charge of the photo content on websites, as well as her Instagram account.

“I had the time of my life in New York,” Weems said. “It’s crazy to think that I went from going to school in a small town like Grand Junction and moved to one of the biggest, busiest cities in the world. I’m really glad that I was able to get such a great experience and opportunity through CMU.”

This semester, Weems is scheduled for 23 credits, and is working two jobs on campus. Weems works as the student marketing manager for career services, advertising their programs and events, such as the upcoming etiquette dinner. He is also this year’s Sodexo intern.

Even with his busy class and work schedules, Weems still manages to save time for his hobbies. He starts his days with 6 a.m. yoga sessions at the Maverick Center and has been a regular attendee of the group exercise sessions.

“Yoga is something that I’ve been doing since freshman year, and I go whenever I can,” Weems said. “It allows me to challenge myself and push my limits. It calls for great concentration and focus, and it can also be physically demanding – not a lot of people realize that. Being Kristin’s intern in New York was great because it involved everything I enjoy- marketing, photography and yoga. I guess you could also say I’m still doing all three this year at CMU.”

Weems is also an avid traveler. He’s been to 10 different major cities in this past year alone – some of them being Tokyo, Japan and Shanghai, China. He hopes to continue his travels through his career.

“I believe marketing will take me places,” Weems said. “It’s something that’ll always be in demand. I’ve always loved visiting places for vacations, but actually living in New York for a whole semester put things in perspective. I would love to end up in New York eventually, but we’ll see how things work out.”
