Social media drawbacks

Does the good outweigh the bad when it comes to scrolling endlessly?

In the past couple decades we have advanced our knowledge as a species through the prowess of technology. Things that we couldn’t even conceive of 30 years ago are common nowadays.

With the evolution of technology, the aspect of social media appeared in everybody’s lives, seemingly out of nowhere. Almost every person with access to the Internet currently has social media. While there are positive  features, such as spreading information to the world and entertaining the idle and the bored, there are many drawbacks to social media.

There are many complicated issues surrounding social media. One of the biggest issues is that we are turning into slaves to what we call entertainment, spending hours watching content from people around the world, specifically geared towards our interests.

I can’t help but wonder, what is the point? How is this productive or useful in any way? Of course you can say that it helps to kill time, but it is also ripping it away. Today we can actually check on our phones how much time we waste while watching Instagram reels.

How much do we procrastinate by losing  track of time? Life is about keeping a balance between what is  too much and too little and honestly, we spend too much time on social media as a society.

Without mentioning the amount of negativity and toxicity you can find on the Internet nowadays, with millions of videos of people hating each other for barbaric reasons, I’ve seen how people  abuse each other just for the thrill of it. I personally have nothing against dark humor but there are so many things that cross the line of what’s funny and what’s messed up. It would seem that most of the creators of content for social media have a kink with being disgusting to people.

From people supporting suicide to body shaming, we have found the most passive side to being a horrible human being. People take advantage of the fact that they are behind a screen and there won’t be any real consequences to their lack of empathy. I am not claiming that every person that uses social media behaves this way, but they are also supporting it through negligence to the dark parts of what you can see online.

I invite you to try to be more conscious in how you behave online and to differentiate what is a sick or a witty joke.
