Recruiting is the best way to build a sustainable, successful program. With that in mind, fans have to be excited about the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Maverick football team’s future, as they hauled in a monster recruiting class of 48 players. In 2017, for example, the Mavericks inked just 22 players.
“We knew when we set out to get this recruiting class that we had to go and get our type of guys. You hear that a lot, but to be able to truly go out and find guys that are going to be able to fit for us here at CMU was our biggest priority. […] We had to really make sure we found high-character guys that can come in and help make us a culture that can sustain winning, year after year,” head football coach Miles Kochevar said during an interview.
Overall, CMU added 11 linebackers, 10 defensive linemen, seven offensive linemen, seven defensive backs, seven receivers, five tight ends and one “athlete” (unpositioned player).
While Kochevar expressed optimism about every recruit, he highlighted a couple of athletes by name that he thinks could make an immediate impact. These names include defensive linemen Isaiah Williams from Denton, Texas and Nico Moreno from Palisade, Colorado, as well as safety Jamel Acosta Lewis from Amarillo, Texas.
