On Tuesday, April 9, the Colorado Mesa University Residence Hall Association held a basket decorating event in preparation for Easter, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the University Center.
“We wanted to provide a way for students to create and then bring home souvenirs to remember their fun experience with friends,” Vice President of Public Relations Breanda Petsch said.
Students could attend and decorate wooden eggs and tin buckets with various materials supplied. The idea was that the tin buckets would be small enough to keep in a dorm room and fill them with anything that they choose.
“We feel, allowing the students to get together and foster their creativity outside of the classroom helps to cultivates an open, and unique sort of community during the event and after thereof,” Petsch said.
The predominant themes were creativity and spring. Some students made some truly impressive works out of the small wooden eggs, and worked to paint the small buckets to better fit their rooms and give a taste of spring.
Easter this year is on April 21, a much later celebration than usual this year, because Easter is celebrated the Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, which is the first full moon after the start of spring. Since there was a full moon on March 20, when spring hadn’t started yet, it was declared that Easter would have to wait until the next full moon, a month later.
