Remembering Taylor Hickman

1300

April 21, 2023– In light of Taylor Hickman’s passing earlier this April, many Mavericks and members of the Grand Junction community held a vigil to honor him at the Delta Field in front of the Jac Kephart Fine Arts building.

Hickman was a senior in studio art at Colorado Mesa University (CMU), who, among many things, is primarily remembered for his friendly attitude and inspiring, colorful art.

Senior Taylor Hickman is a well-known, friendly face on campus. He passed in his residence on April 17.

“One of the most amazing things about Taylor was his ability to work from an open heart,” professor of art Josh Butler said.

The candlelight vigil was sponsored by the Associated Student Government Senator Lindsey Rittimann and went from 7 to 8 in the evening. Friends and family of Hickman shared heartfelt stories and speeches before lighting candles in the 33-year-old’s honor.

Additionally, attendees were invited to tour a display comprised of Hickman’s paintings and artist statement at the Triangle Gallery, which is located on the second floor of the Jac Kephart Fine Arts Building.

Hickman’s paintings will remain on display indefinitely within the Jac Kephart building’s Triangle Gallery for students to view.

This gallery is one of many Hickman has been featured in. In fact, a proud memory for many who knew Hickman is his senior art show this last March at CMU’s downtown gallery, 437CO.

According to a letter sent to students by CMU President John Marshall on April 19, Hickman was on the Dean’s List and due to graduate in December. Many friends also spoke on his achievements and aspirations for the future, including senior in studio art Ajay Gustafson.

“I’m heartbroken that he’s not here, but grateful to have known him. […] He spoke about grad school, talked about a program in Portugal he really liked. He said his parents were his biggest supporters and knew the students and professors were cheering for him,” Gustafson wrote in an Instagram post. “I hope he knew how valuable he is.”

Students who have been impacted in any manner are encouraged to seek support from the counseling services available at the Student Wellness Center on campus. Appointments can be scheduled on their website, www.coloradomesa.edu/student-services/wellness.

“Tell those you love, admire and care about that they matter to you. I really try to,” Gustafson said. “Because sharing our lives through art is wonderful, but art matters because the people behind the art matter even more.”
