Redshirt junior Kyle Pearson is one of the best golfer on the Mavericks team.
He is looking to accomplish more this year by winning a championship.
“I feel like I put in a lot of time to perfect what I do. I don’t do just enough to get by, I want to do whatever I can to get better,” Pearson said.
Pearson was named to the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Men’s Golf All-Decade Team. He currently has the fifth-best career scoring average with a 74.46. Parsons also ranks second all-time in eagles with nine.
He shot a low round of 68 twice last year in the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invite and the Sierra Central Wildcat Classic. Pearson had a team-leading six rounds under par, with three of those including rounds in the 60s.
He led the CMU Men’s Golf Team with a 73.67 scoring average last season. Pearson’s goal is to drop his scoring average to 72 this season. Hitting the ball well off the tee and one-shot putts will be crucial for dropping his scoring average.
“Putting would be the strongest part of my game, and then my wedges or driver,” Pearson said. “I just try to put the basics to use, I don’t try to do anything fancy. Just hit it in the fairway, get in on the green, and hit the putt.”
Pearson isn’t just a good golfer though; he is a good teammate. He understands that everyone playing in the tournament must play well for the team to succeed.
He is looked at as another coach by his teammates and CMU Head Coach Scott Sullivan. His ability to break down the course and read the greens make him invaluable.
“He is kind of an assistant coach for me, and he helps the other guys with their game by showing them how he works on his game and the things that helped him become a better scorer,” said Sullivan. “If he knows one of our guy’s weakness is putting, he helps with their putting.”
Pearson is set to have a larger role on the team after being named captain for the Mavericks. His new role requires him to lead by example and hold everyone including, himself, accountable.
“I’m there to hold everyone accountable because I want to play so well, and I want the team to play so well,” Pearson said. “I want the rest of our team to be at every workout, practicing extra on off days, so it is an accountability and support role at the same time.”
Pearson knows that being a captain is more than just accountability. He has made an emphasis to get closer to everybody on the team including making sure they have all the help they need.
Pearson wants the team to be a unit from the top down so that they can succeed as much as possible as a team.
