Powderhorn for a low price

For the last nine years, Mavs have teamed up with Powderhorn Ski Resort in order to arrange an inexpensive day trip out to Powderhorn, accommodating all levels of skiers.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) will be returning to Powderhorn for its annual Mavs Takeover the Mountain event this year on Feb. 11. Assistant Student Life Director Haley Wiedeman has played a significant role in organizing the trip and transportation.

“We work with Powderhorn–they do discounted lift tickets for the first 200 students that buy tickets through them,” Wiedeman said. “We also do 20% off lift tickets for anyone with a MAVcard.”

The Mavs Takeover the Mountain also opens up an affordable opportunity for CMU students looking to get an introduction to skiing or snowboarding.

“We do an $89 learn to ski. It’s pretty much your skis, a lift ticket, and a lesson, all for under $100,” Wiedeman said.

On an average day at Powderhorn for beginner skiers, the total would come out to well over $200. This has been a great opportunity for CMU and Powderhorn, as both establishments have grown significantly in recent years, as Powderhorn has begun to receive an influx of college skiers on weekends from Grand Junction.

“I think a lot of it has to do with Powderhorn in and of itself. They’ve kind of revamped who the target audience is; they have done a lot of construction to really build up the resort. I think, because they’ve seen increased interest from students throughout the season, we sell out of our 200 lift tickets pretty frequently,” Wiedeman said. “Powderhorn doesn’t do this for a lot of other people, this is a partnership they see as beneficial.”

This year, Mavs Takeover the Mountain will have local Grand Junction live bands playing, as well as CMU’s own KMSA 91.3 FM at the top of the mountain to play music and do giveaways.

Discounted tickets can be bought through the Powderhorn website with the code “MAVSTAKE23.”

Student Life will be providing lunch and transportation to Powderhorn at 8 a.m. and back to campus at 5 p.m. for $15 on a first come first serve basis. Go grab your lift tickets now for CMU’s Mavs Takeover the Mountain on Feb. 11.
