Org Letter: Outdoor Program

What do you love? Reading, perhaps. Skiing or hiking, maybe. Drawing, swimming,  football or bouldering. Have you ever tried ice climbing? Have you ever pushed the limit of your own physical and mental capacities?

Even if you said yes, you could do better. You can push yourself more. That is why the Outdoor Program exists at Colorado Mesa University. Our mission statement says: We aim to inspire the passion for self-development by providing opportunities for life changing experiences. What our mission statement means:

We work as a team to push each other out of our comfort zones and into unexplored realms of our own abilities.

Our outdoor adventures enable everybody to participate, regardless of experience level, and we celebrate the growth of every individual.

The road to growth demands pushing your limits, but it is ultimately a private journey. We are passionate about giving you the tools to achieve your full potential.

Our passion manifests itself in many different ways. Every day, during the week, we offer free excursions. During the sunny months we go hiking, climbing, stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (so get those days off!). In the winter we provide free shuttles up to Powderhorn. Every Wednesday of the semester we offer nighttime adventures in various forms; sometimes hot springs and other times hiking under desert stars. Also, on Wednesdays, we offer a free shuttle and free rentals to the Grand Valley Climbing gym, which is the prime place to build skills that will elevate your next climb in Moab or Indian Creek. After we teach you about our favorite outdoor activities our rental program enables you to take out good gear for low prices and create your own adventure. The weekends are the best part of the semester. We bring you to every corner of the region. From rafting the Colorado River to canyoneering in Utah to ice climbing in Ouray.

The Outdoor Program has carved a niche at Colorado Mesa University and in the Grand Junction community for explorers to convene. The good news is that this niche is big enough for every person to participate in whatever activity they desire. Nobody is turned away. Everybody belongs. There is an activity and adventure for everyone. The best part? The people. The employees of the Outdoor Program exist solely on cowboy coffee and a passion for sharing their hype about the outdoors. We exist for YOU.

Our desire is to inspire a passion for self-growth through life-altering experiences in the outdoors. Now is the time to find new hobbies to complement your reading, drawing, video game design, or anything else. Come find us; we are excited to meet you!
