Nursing students put on health fair for students

Chest compressions, darts, and drunk driving goggles served to educate students on health-related matters at the Colorado Mesa University Health Fair, put on by nursing students in their final year.

“We teach about different health things going on with college kids. We do a lot of fun interactive stuff so that people get more involved with their health,” said Level 4 Nursing Student Sierra Bigelow.

Wednesday, Oct. 16 marked the day of the fair, held in the University Center. 

Activities offered included a CPR station, where students could practice chest compressions; a STD-education station, where students could throw darts; a drunk driving station, where students tried to walk in a straight line with drunk goggles; and more.

Partnering with the Outdoor Program, the fair also offered a mental health booth for students.

The CPR station had practice dummies for students to try their hand. “The regulations have changed from the 30 compressions to [instead] one minute, so now we’re teaching hands only, where you do at least 100 compressions per minute,” Level 4 Nursing Student Jordan Gabriel said. “We’re teaching people the right depth, the right pace to go, the difference between doing it on adults and children, and then just answering any questions they might have.” 

The fair also offered a booth in collaboration with the Student Wellness Center, where flu shots were able to be scheduled.
