Associated Student Government (ASG) President Beau Flores signed his first executive order, 18-01, on July 17. The order established the press secretary position, a presidentially appointed executive seat. The seat receives $1000 in a yearly stipend that is paid for by the ASG Reserve Budget. Flores created the position and the order to honor the Flores/Vela campaign promise of transparency.
Flores acknowledged that many campaign promises made by politicians can amount to nothing more than words used to get elected, but he did not want his promises to fall into that category.
“I said to Jeff (Vela), what if we actually did what we promised,” Flores said. “It can’t be that hard.”
Flores emailed copies of the of the order and a signing statement to ASG senators and The Criterion to announce both the new executive seat and the reasoning behind its creation.
“The past year the Associated Student Government has been under much scrutiny from students and media about the transparency of the Organization. This executive order serves as the first solution to transparency, by dedicating one person whose job will solely be to communicate with students and press about what the Associated Student Government is doing,” Flores said in the email. “They will also work to make a more user-friendly website and maintain all social media to give a consistent presence online.”
Flores reiterated his dedication to transparency by his administration in the email.
“Transparency was one of the key pillars that this administration ran off of. This administration will work to keep all of our campaign promises, while serving our students to the fullest of our capability,” Flores said in the email.
Flores stated that the search for a press secretary is underway and invited those interested in the position to contact him.
