Over the summer, the results for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) All-Sports Competition Cup were announced. Colorado Mesa University finished in second place, with 865 points, behind Colorado School of Mines and their 895.5 points. Previous finishes for CMU include; another second place finish for the 2015-2016 school year and two first places in both the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years.
There are four core sports in the RMAC; football or men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball. The finishes of these teams in the RMAC’s regular-season standings make up a large part of the overall accumulation of points.
The remaining points are compiled from six wild-card sports (three men’s sports and three women’s sports). Those six wild-card sports are chosen based off of the school’s best finish in the other 19 of the 23 total RMAC sports. Points are then computed based on a team’s finish in the RMAC regular season standings.
CMU’s high finish was due to an impressive six regular season championships (baseball, football, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, softball and men’s tennis) and another five RMAC tournament championships (baseball, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, softball and men’s swimming & diving).
CMU also had 13 student-athletes earn player of the year honors, along with five coaches earning the title of ‘Coach of the Year.’ The Mavericks’ athletic department displayed a 3.11 GPA, higher than that of the overall student body’s GPA of 2.92. This led to four student-athletes receiving academic athlete of the year accolades.
