With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, many students are wondering what to do or if they should do anything at all. It can be somewhat of a stressful holiday, whether in a relationship or not, but have no fear. Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) very own KMSA radio station will be throwing a masquerade-themed semi-formal on Friday, Feb. 14, from 7-10 p.m.
The dance will be held in the Meyer Ballroom on the second floor of the University Center (UC.) Mia Fairbanks, the general manager of KMSA, said that the semi-formal will be an event that is open to and including of the entire student body, and that everyone is welcome to come and have a good time.
“We wanted to hold an event for the whole student body, and we saw kind of a gap in the events that were already being held. There’s no semi-formal or formal dance, besides the ones that the fraternities and sororities hold,” Fairbanks said. “We really wanted to hold something that was a little different than what everybody gets to go to, and that people can come have fun and enjoy some music at.”
Masquerade masks for the dance will be available at the KMSA tables in the UC this week along with the presale tickets for students who wish to decorate their masks before the dance. There will also be a decorating station available at the dance itself. Or, if they prefer, students can wear their own personal masks. Fairbanks said that when it comes to masks, students are encouraged to express their own creativity.
“We’ve got people that have said they’re wearing their Star Wars clone trooper masks, so it’s really open to anyone,” Fairbanks said.
The Maverick Masquerade Semi-Formal doubles as a way for students to have a fun night out as well as to get to know what KMSA is and what it’s all about.
KMSA 91.3 is the radio station for CMU. It is run by students and is broadcasted all throughout the valley. According to Justin Platt, the music director for KMSA, being a part of the radio station is a great way to get involved on campus.
“I think that if more students are involved and they see the [organization] they could be like ‘oh, maybe that’s something I want to do in the future’ and it’s something they didn’t know they wanted to do,” Platt said.
Every student here at CMU has their own interests and hobbies. Platt said that a public event, such as a dance like this, gives students the opportunity to get out of their dorms, have fun and meet new people.
“The event is for couples who want to go have fun on Valentine’s Day who are not sure what to do,” Platt said. “It’s also for people who are looking to leave with somebody, so come with a date or leave with one.”
According to both Fairbanks and Platt, the whole goal of the dance is to bring CMU students together to have a good time and enjoy a night of fun on Valentine’s Day.
“I really like the idea of this school being very integrated with each other,” Platt said.
Tickets go for $6 before the dance and $8 at the door. Students can purchase presale tickets in the UC at the KMSA tables that will be set up next week. Presale tickets will be available Monday, Wednesday and Friday (Feb. 10, 12, and 14) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
