Mavily is a word that gets thrown around at Colorado Mesa University, but what exactly does this word mean? It is the combination of “Family” and “Mavericks” creating Mav-ily: the Maverick Family. The inherent meaning to individuals is where the true meaning of Mavily is derived.
The connotation of Mavily can be wide spread and casts a huge net of interpretations. To some it is just another ploy by administration to increase admissions while to others it’s a badge of inclusiveness to wear in an unfamiliar setting.
“Mavily means that it is a family, not just a college,” Freshman Maddy Moore said. “I appreciate all the work that they put into making people comfortable.”
While it is only a word, one that can be cheesy to some, it can spark a fire of friendliness for those that are worried about their life in college. Rather than going to an overnight school, they are coming home to their Mavily. This is a nice concept, but the promise does seem to fall short for other students.
“The idea is great and I am 100 percent for it,” Kendall Vanderschouwschroeder, sophomore at CMU, said. “However, the execution is flawed. There are still bullies on campus, students don’t always participate, or have the time to, and there is a lack of events, or at least the advertising for it, for the whole campus to engage in, which is essential for ‘Mavily’ to succeed.”
Mavily is a concept that needs to be accepted by the students in order for it to work. If there are no members of the Mavily, there is no Mavily for new students to join. Strides have clearly been made by the university to include the new Freshmen the best way possible and get their college career started on the right foot, however there are some parts of the effort made that could use some shoring up.
It can be difficult to make it inclusive to every student out there due to the varying beliefs and opinions that each individual student possess and hopefully CMU will be
able to create and foster a community that can act as a family for those far away from their original home.
