Mavericks win third straight RMAC championship

Colorado Mesa University (CMU)  finished out the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) championships on top. 

After four long days of competition both the men’s and women’s teams finished in first place in the conference championship. This is the third year in the row that the Mavericks have won. 

The women’s team continued to set school records on the final day of the RMAC championships.

Starting in prelims, junior Lily Borgenheimer broke the CMU and RMAC championship record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.04. In the final round of the 200-yard breaststroke she beat her own record that she set earlier in the day. Senior Kennedy Bright followed Borgenheimer and placed second in the event. 

Sophomore Lauren White and freshman Katrina Mastoskova placed second and third for the Maverick behind Savannah Tice of Western Colorado University. 

The Mavericks placed second and third in the 100-yard freestyle as well. Senior Noel Scott placed second, while junior Logan Anderson placed third. 

Another record was set for the Mavericks in the 1,650 freestyle. Junior Robyn Naze came in second place while setting the record with a time of 17:29.99. Senior Isabella Hanssen held the record before Naze’s performance but still hung on to the third place finish. 

CMU took first place in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay while Colorado School of Mines and Oklahoma Baptist came in second and third. 

On the diving side of things, seniors Natayla Dahkle and Keylee Eakman finished second and third in the 3-meter dive.

With the women’s team victory, they also set a record of having a winning margin of 566 ½ points. 

The men were up next to finish out the four day event. CMU continued to show that they are good at what they do in the pool.

Starting things off the Mavericks finished first and third in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Gavin Anderson finished first and junior Logan Ellis finished third. 

In the 100-yard freestyle FreshmanBen Simpson finished in third place. Junior Makai Duport finished in third as well in the 200-yard backstroke. 

The Mavericks swept the podium in the 200-yard breaststroke. Junior Mahmoud Elgayar finished first, junior Jake Simmons finished second and redshirt sophomore James Kaku finished third. 

Simmons would later be named the swimmer of the meet and Chandler Livingston would be named the diver of the meet. 

The Mavericks who qualified for the NCAA swim and dive championships will compete in Birmingham, A.L. The championships start on Mar. 16.
