The Colorado Mesa University(CMU) volleyball team went 2-0 on Saturday to begin their season.

With a doubleheader lined up to start the season, the Mavericks came out victorious in both games only losing one set. The team was excited to finally get back out on the court to show what they can accomplish.

“Our whole team was so beyond excited to play. We went in with all the energy and momentum we could get and the whole time we were on the court we had some insane energy,” Junior, Holly Schmidt, said.

In the first game against Regis University (RU), CMU took control of the game early, winning the game 3-0. RU looked to come back in the third and final set of the match but could not get close as the Mavericks ended up winning the match.

The Maverick freshman made names for themselves, proving that they have what it takes to play at the collegiate level. Freshman Gabrielle Vogt had 17 kills throughout the two matches. Freshman Sabrina VanDeList had an outstanding start with 66 assists.

“I am really really happy about the freshman Hahni Johnson had an ace on her first contact, Sierra Hunt’s first contact was a stuff block straight down, Sabrina doesn’t play like a freshman and Caroline came in a tough spot after we lost the first set and does some quality things for us,” CMU Head Coach, Dave Fleming, said.

Redshirt-junior Ashton Reese dominated from the right side leading the team with 21 kills throughout the two matches. Senior Maddi Foutz ended the day with 23 and Schmidt ended with 22.

The Mavericks stepped on the court against Colorado State University-Pueblo(CSUP) for their last match on the day. After fighting to stay in the first set, they fell short and lost 26-24. But were able to come back in the next three sets to pull off the 3-1 victory.

Junior Emily Tucker led the team in aces with five in the second game. Freshman Haley Hahn had two against CSUP.

“We want to serve aggressively and force them to run something that they don’t wanna run, force them to be uncomfortable, put pressure on them. But I do like how aggressive we were serving and we can get even better,” Fleming said.

CMU feels prepared and ready for what the rest of the season has in store saying that they have confidence in themselves and their abilities. They know that they have depth throughout their roster and know that they are grounded after their matches.

The Mavericks continue their season on the road against Western Colorado University and Westminster College on January 30 starting at 2 P.M.
