Three Maverick goals in the last 20 minutes of the game gave them the edge they needed to win the season opener.

The lights were back on at Maverick Field Thursday night as Colorado Mesa University (CMU) looked to start their season on the right foot against the University of Texas- Permian Basin (UTPB).

The Maverick offense took control in the last half of the game as they were able to get by the UTPB defense. In the 79 minute of the game, senior defender Isa Trujillo was able to find the net for the first time and gave CMU their forest goal of the season. Trujillo was able to get a good read on the pass from junior defender Ethan Anderson before putting the ball into the net.

Not even a minute later, sophomore forward Alec Fronapfel got a pass from freshman midfielder John Roberts that he was able to get behind the UTPB goalie for another goal.

Going into the last ten minutes of the game the Mavericks had a solid lead but freshman forward Joey Joiner solidified the Mavericks victory with one last goal with an assist from Chris Boyd.

Even though only three goals were scored, out of the ten shots CMU made, nine of them were on the goal.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Conner Durant was good at the net as he saved everything that came his way with five saves against the UTPB offense.

The Mavericks will continue their impressive start to the season as they will play one more game this weekend at home. They will compete against Texas A&M International University on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. on Maverick Field.
