Mavericks win a big offensive series against Mountain Lions

The Mavericks have dominated offensively throughout the series with the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs (UCCS) but weren’t able to get the sweep and went 3-1 in the series. 

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) got off to a hot start Friday afternoon as they got the 16-0 victory. 

The Mavericks offense started off slow but a big seven run third inning gave them the upper hand. Senior infielder Caleb Farmer singled up the middle scoring sophomore and senior outfielders Robert Sharrar and Johnny Carr. 

Senior infielder Jordan Stubbings singled after Farmer allowing Farmer and senior outfielder Matthew Turner to score. CMU continued to see the ball well off of Jonathan Cowles as freshman infielder Max Valdez doubled scoring Stubbings. Valdez then was able to advance to third by a throwing error by the UCCS center fielder. 

Sophomore infielder Harrison Rodgers tripled to end the Mavericks seven run third inning as senior infielder Spencer Bramwell came around to score.

CMU was able to tack on some more runs in the sixth as senior outfielder Matt Cassin came off the bench and singled to score Carr to give the Mavericks a 8-0 lead. Farmer then came up to the plate with another RBI single scoring Cassin. 

Senior infielder Chase Hamilton hit a fly ball to the second baseman Kiichi Sato as the ball was dropped and Farmer and Turner scored on the play. With Hamilton on base, Bramwell hit a long fly ball over the wall in left center field adding two more runs to the CMU run total. 

In the seventh, sophomore outfielder Jared Grentz came up to bat and hit a triple to left center allowing two more Mavericks to score. Sophomore infielder Ethan Ezor walked in the seventh with the bases loaded allowing Grentz to score giving CMU their final run of the day at 16. 

Sophomore right handed pitcher Cooper Vasquez came in in the third inning for David Reckers and had a solid performance on the mound. He was able to strike out six while only giving up two hits. He did not give up any runs or any walks. 

CMU scored 22 total runs in the doubleheader Saturday afternoon as the Mavericks were able to gather the series win against the Mountain Lions. 

In game one, junior right handed pitcher Blake Rohm only gave up two hits in five innings of work. He was able to strike out four batters but relied on the defense behind him to get the outs. 

Junior Haydn McGeary hit his first three run home run of the day as he was able to drive one to left field in the third. On the play he was able to score Farmer and junior outfielder Julian Boyd. 

Two more runs were able to score for the Mavericks in the inning. Bramwell doubled to left field, scoring Villafuerte and Stubbings. Hamilton was able to knock down a single into left field in the fifth scoring Rodgers but was out on the throw as he tried to stretch a double. 

CMU was able to score six more runs in the sixth as they were able to capitalize off of small errors made by the UCCS defense. 

UCCS attacked early in game two of the doubleheader as the Mavericks had to work from behind for the first time in the series. Caleb Stubbings singled to left field allowing Sato to score after a lead off triple to begin the game against sophomore left handed pitcher Kannon Handy. 

CMU got the run back as Villafuerte doubled to left center as Farmer scored. 

Matt Johnson retaliated with an RBI hit of his own in the top half of the second inning scoring Mason Pastorello. 

Cassin put down a bunt in the second inning scoring Bramwell but Cassin himself would be out at first.

CMU was able to string some hits together in the third and fourth innings to help them take a solid lead against UCCS. Hamilton doubled scoring McGeary and sophomore infielder Stenevson Reynolds in the third. 

McGeary was able to get a hold of another ball but this time drove it to right center field giving him another three run home run. Farmer and Sharrar scored on the play. Before the home run, Farmer singled, scoring Cassin and Gonzalez. Reynolds was able to collect an RBI of his own as he was able to fly out to right field scoring Farmer in the sixth. 

The Mountain Lions rallied in the seventh start with a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to Jaeden Hagmann that allowed Macully Sahr to score. Kit Wiggington then flew out to right field and Henry Ryan was able to tag up on the play. Another productive out from C.Stubbings allowed Sato to score. 

Even though UCCS rallied late, they still lost in a 10-5 game. 

The momentum from the seventh inning carried into today’s series finale as the Mountain Lions were able to win the finale game by a score of 6-14. 

C.Stubbings led the Mountain Lions squad as he had seven RBI day with four hits and two runs scored himself in six at bats. He had three RBI doubles in the first seven innings of play. His biggest RBI double came in the sixth as he doubled with the bases loaded, clearing the bases. 

The Mavericks scored in the first as Villafuerte reached on a dropped fly ball from Sato and Farmer scored sprinting from first. 

CMU did not score again until McGeary doubled down the right field line in the fifth when Farmer scored on the play. McGeary reached third on a throwing error. Villafuerte grounded out to Ryan at third allowing McGeary to score on the play. 

Rodgers was able to drive something over the right field wall after Hunter Owens replaced Jon Soto on the mound. Bramwell then hit another two run home run in the seventh with Reynolds on base but the Mavericks were not able to pull off the comeback win. Reynolds had a strong day at the plate for the Mavericks as he went 2-4 with a walk.

Eight different pitchers were used by the Mavericks starting with junior right handed pitcher Joey Mazzetti who was only in the game for two innings as he gave up two runs. He was credited with the loss in the game. 

The Mavericks will get a weekend off as they will head down to Alamosa, Colo. to compete in a pod series with Adams State University and Regis University on April.1. CMU will start off the pod series with a game against the Rangers at 3 p.m.
