The Mavericks played more efficient baseball on Saturday afternoon, defeating Adams State University 8-1 in game one and 10-0 in game two. CMU kept doing what they’ve accomplished all homestand.
In game one, Tanner Rempel started things off for the Mavericks by putting the ball in play and reaching on a fielding error that scored Hunter Douglas in the first inning. Rempel put the Mavericks up 2-0 with an RBI single in the third.
The Mavericks were led by the 1-4 hitters in the lineup, who combined to go 9-for-16 with two home runs and six RBIs. Garrett Ball launched one of those home runs in the fifth inning, sending a towering two-run shot over the left field fence.
Reagan Todd pitched six quality innings, allowing three hits, one unearned run, struck out seven and walked four. Jake Angelopulos reached on a walk, moved to third on a throwing error by Rempel and scored on Tony Sanich’s RBI groundout for the Grizzlies lone run.
Todd induced eight groundouts and only needed 81 pitches to retire Adams State through six.
CMU brought home some tack on runs in the sixth inning. Douglas pushed a two-run single through the right side. After Douglas stole second, Caleb Farmer lifted his fourth home run of the year to left to push their lead to 8-1.
The Mavericks consistent play held up in the win, outpacing the Grizzlies 12-4 in the hit column.
AJ Landis allowed a two-out single in the seventh but got Erik Hildebrandt to ground out to end the ball game.
CMU shut out the Grizzlies for the second time in three games in game two. Left-hander Chris Ramirez picked up his fourth win after pitching a complete game shutout. The southpaw struck out six Grizzlies and scattered six singles.
The bats were still blistering hot for the Mavericks as they collected 14 hits. CMU scored in four consecutive innings, roping the ball all over the yard on the warm afternoon.
Douglas continued to be a rally starter from the leadoff spot and went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. His RBI single in the third gave the Mavericks their first run, and he added another RBI single in the fourth inning. The center fielder went 5-for-8 with four RBIs on the day, improving his batting average to a team-leading .445 on the year.
Freshman Jordan Stubbings came in to pinch hit for Ball in the sixth inning and delivered a statement of his own. With two runners on, Stubbings launched a majestic shot that soared over the left fielder’s head and cleared the fence, giving the Mavericks a 9-0 lead. He leads the team with five home runs.
Other freshmen Spencer Bramwell joined the hit parade and delivered his second RBI of the year with an RBI single in the seventh.
The Mavericks are now 28-12 with a 19-8 RMAC record and enjoyed a winning homestand no matter what happens Sunday as they sit at 5-2 between the past two home series.
CMU will look for a series sweep over ASU Sunday afternoon with the first pitch at 12 p.m.
To say Colorado Mesa University is dominating the series would be an understatement. The team is clicking on both sides of the ball as they await conference leader Colorado School of Mines next weekend, whom the Mavericks are a half-a-game behind.
