The Dixie State Trailblazers came to Suplizio Field looking to spoil Leadoff Weekend for the Colorado Mesa University baseball team. After two days of action, it’s the Mavericks who have control of the series. CMU swept a doubleheader against the Trailblazers, winning both games by final scores of 5-2 and 1-0.

Reagan Todd has been getting it done with the bat but did his part on the mound for the first game on Saturday. The junior pitched five innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out five. Todd allowed the lone run in the first but breezed through the next four innings of work to capture his second win of the season. He also went 1-for-3 at the dish with one walk.

With the Mavericks sporting a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Hunter Douglas hit his first home run as a Maverick, depositing a solo home run to right center to extend the lead to 3-1.

In his second appearance of the year, Jake Mielock came on in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and surrendering two walks while striking out three. Mielock’s earned run came off the bat of Bryce Feist who homered to left and cut the Mavericks lead to 3-2.

Tyler Sandoval went 1-for-3 delivering an RBI single in the second. Garrett Ball and John Ballard helped extend the Mavericks lead in the seventh and eighth with RBI singles. Ball laid down a bunt to bring in Ballard.

Aj Landis secured his first save throwing 1.1 innings allowing no hits and striking out two.

JR McDermott’s performance in the second game helped the Mavericks sneak past the Trailblazers. McDermott bounced back after a rough performance against Concordia-Irvine. He tossed seven innings to secure the complete game shutout. He only allowed two hits and struck out seven.

McDermott retired the side in order in every inning except the seventh and struck out the side in the sixth.

Ball provided the game’s only run by driving in Zach McLeod with an RBI double in the third.

The Mavericks committed no errors in the ballgame, while the Trailblazers committed two.

CMU improved to 5-2 and will look for the sweep Sunday at 12 p.m.
