The Mavericks continued their winning streak with big performances from their freshman and their highest-scoring performance in 2019.

The women’s soccer team came home to Walker Field on a chilly Friday night and claimed their territory as they got a big win over New Mexico Highlands. Taylor Jones led the Mavericks with two goals in the second half to secure the win.

Jones came into Friday night’s game with two goals on the season already but added two more in the victory over New Mexico Highlands. Jones was able to find open passes from Ryanne Parker twice in the second half to add to her goal total for the season.

“Taylor Jones has been an awesome forward for us, she is a smart runner and we have been working on techniques of finishing and she has been super coachable taking those points on and it really showed tonight.” Head coach Dani Thurman said.

Early in the game, Zoe Peterson got the Mavericks on the scoreboard. Peterson saw a great pass from sophomore Lexi Newton that she was able to get a good touch on and to score a great goal. The goal scored by Peterson was her third of the season.

The Mavericks have a lot of youth on their team this season and they saw the youth have a huge impact on the game as freshman Kristen Capan, Mikayla Eccher and Tallin Nieman all were able to get the ball in the back of the next Friday night.

Capan was able to find the goal for the second time this season when she caught sight of a pass from freshman defender Devyn Parsons giving Parsons her first assist of the season.

“We have a lot of freshmen and they all have been doing so great. The group is very coachable and eager to learn, which I think has been a huge part of their success on the field.” Thurman said.

The last two goals in this game were scored by Mikayla Eccher and Tallin Nieman. Eccher was able to find a beautiful pass from Madison Rasimas to score her first collegiate goal.

Nieman found the goal after receiving a pass from Michaela Dangler in the final minutes of this game. The freshman forward was able to celebrate with her teammates after she scored the first goal of her college career.

“This win tonight was super important to help the group with confidence going into Sunday’s match against CSU-Pueblo,” Thurman said.

The Mavericks stay at home after their big 6-0 victory over New Mexico Highlands when Colorado State University-Pueblo comes to town for another RMAC matchup Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Walker Field.
