The Colorado Mesa University softball team traveled to the state capital this weekend to take on Colorado School of Mines at Regency Athletic Complex. The Mavericks lost to the Orediggers in the first game 5-4 and in the second game, they won 8-3.

In the first inning, AnnMarie Torres kicked things off for the team when she hit a home run to left field to give the Mavericks an early lead of 1-0. The Orediggers responded quickly to Torres home run by scoring three runs of their own.

The third inning was a big inning in this game for the Mavericks. Kellie Mrofcza came up to the batter’s box as the tying run and tie the game she did. Mrofcza hit a two-run bomb to deep center field which allowed the Mavericks to tie the game at three. The Mavericks would take a lead though in this one when Brooke Doumer hit a home run to left field. The Mavericks took an early 6-1 lead in the second game by scoring one run in the first inning and five runs in the second inning. Torres was able to connect with the ball in the first hitting a single which scored Doumer from third who started the game with a leadoff triple. The Parker native is getting off to a hot start this season for the team with hit four home runs and 25 hits.

The big five-run inning started when Hinson hit a big triple to left center that scored Alex Dufour and Tegan Woosley. Hinson scored on a single by Doumer who advanced to third when Mrofcza hit a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Both would eventually score when Torres hit a long single up the center field gap.

In the fourth inning, the Mavericks scored a pair of runs when Kaila Jacobi singled up the left side that scored Torres and Doumer. Alexa Samuels helped out the team with a single up the middle that allowed Jacobi to score and for Lauren Wedman to advance to third.
