As September comes to a close, the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team made a clean sweep against their opponents at home this last weekend. Both Regis University (RU) and Colorado Christian University (CCU) were beaten by the Mavericks. The game against the number 24 nationally Rangers went five sets but Saturday, against the Cougars, was a clean three-set sweep.

On Friday, the Mavericks put up a total of 66 kills, Kasie Gilfert was the leader with 26 of them. Following behind her was Camille Smith with 14 and Katie Scherr with 13. In the realm of assists, Ara Norwood once again led the team: netting 29 out of 60, nearly 50 percent.

While Taylor Woods was third in assists, she was number one in digs, diving for 21.

It was only the third game in the season that had to go five sets and it was the second the Mavericks were able to leave with a victory. All sets were won by five points or less and each team switched off winning a set until CMU ultimately took the fifth set.

Saturday’s sweep against CCU went a lot smoother and CMU demolished in every aspect of the game. Two of their sets were won by ten or more points. The Mavericks won in overall points (62-34), lead in blocks (12-1), got 11 more assists than the Cougars.

Gilfert won the overall weekend in kills, sending 16 to the floor on Saturday. Allison Smith came second with nine and C Smith followed with eight.

The Mavericks remain undefeated at home and increased their winning streak to four games. RU received their second loss in the conference and seventh of the year, making them fourth in the RMAC while CMU climbed up to second behind Colorado School of Mines.

CMU will be on the road this next week for two consecutive days in South Dakota. Friday will see South Dakota Mines and Saturday will be against Black Hill State–both teams are in the bottom four of the RMAC.
