Mavericks manage their injuries

The Mavericks Women’s Basketball Team have experienced some struggles in their last nine games.

We don’t need to worry too much about these struggles because they have dealt with some injuries to key players in the past and have been able to manage.

Senior guard Daniella Turner hasn’t played in the last nine games for Colorado Mesa University (CMU) and she is the team’s leading scorer. Turner has a calming presence for the Mavericks, and without her on the court, CMU has had to look elsewhere for the presence.

Turner is averaging 15 points per game and is the leading scorer for CMU. Part of the issue for the Mavericks has been the lack of consistent scoring in Turner’s absence.

Senior guard Kylyn Rigsby has been one of those key factors for CMU as she set a new career-high in points and rebounds in the last nine games. Rigsby scored 34 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against Regis University to help CMU win.

Rigsby has stepped up when she was asked to whether it was scoring, rebounding or facilitating. She leads the team in assists with 51.

Rigsby has been drawing the defensive assignment of guarding the team’s best player and she has embraced it. She hasn’t shied away from the big moments and taking the tough matchup has allowed her to use her defense to fuel her offense.

Senior guard Morgan Myers-Pack has also been one of those players that has stepped up for CMU. She scored a career-high against Adams State University with 14 points on four of five shooting from behind the arc.

Pack has been a big part of the Mavericks success in Turner’s absence as she has done whatever is asked of her in each game. In certain games, she has been asked to be a defensive force for CMU and has stepped up against tough defensive assignments.

The Maverick’s senior forwards Sierra McNicol and Kelsey Siemons have been key to CMU’s success. They have controlled the paint and the glass in their last couple games.

Siemons is tied with senior guard Sophie Anderson for the lead in the rebounding category with 6.1 rebounds per game.

Siemons is averaging 9.4 points per game, but impact has been defensively along with on the glass. She leads the team in blocks with 28 and she has compiled 14 steals throughout the season.

Anderson has been a force on the offensive glass as she leads the team with 55 offensive rebounds. In Turner’s absence, Anderson has stepped into a facilitating role and is second on the team in assists with 43.

The Maverick’s next game is Friday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. against Regis University in Denver, Colo.
