This past weekend, the Colorado Mesa University Outdoor Track and Field team went on the road to Colorado School of Mines for their first meet of the outdoor season, and they did not disappoint. With several PR’s made and a couple of school records in the javelin, the Mavs are already on a roll.
“It went really well,” head coach Brad Gamble said. “I am very happy with how things started out, moving from indoor to outdoor.”
Winning in two of the events: women’s javelin and men’s pole vault. Caeleigh Bowman beat the competition with a throw of 37.36 meters in women’s javelin and Ellis Nolan won with a height of 5.05 meters in the men’s pole vault.
On the track, Lauren Lipski got second in the 1500m while Garret Angstead, in his first meet, took third in the 100m and Jerod Kuhn took third in the men’s 1500.
This all showed a strong output by the track and field team that promises to get better with more practice and experience as the season goes on. Nick Pulos shined in the meet with a total of five new personal bests.
Nolan Ellis set the NCAA Division II Championship provisional marks. Ellis also managed to complete this task in his first competition since winning the indoor track title for NCAA Division II.
“We had a ton of PRs,” coach Gamble said. “We also saw a few school records which were huge to see in the opening weekend.”
Coming up in the future for the next events, the track team will be looking to improve all around the team, not just focusing in on one aspect. The more that the team practices and pushes themselves during upcoming competitions will give them the best opportunity to perform their best.
“It was overall a good performance by all the event groups,” Gamble said. “I am excited to see what we can do in the future.”
The Mavericks will be separated all over the U.S with competitions in Texas and Utah as well as Colorado come March 29-30.
