Colorado Mesa University (CMU) secures their first win of the season against South Dakota Mines (SDM).

This game had four different players scoring points. Two of them being freshman with their first collegiate level goals.

Junior midfield Ethan Anderson was the first on the scoreboard at 40:34 making the score 0-1.

Freshman forward Joey Joiner scored the first goal of the second at 57:00. He discussed how it felt good to add to the scoreboard. He also mentioned that he has a lot of room for growth with this being his first season with the Mavericks.

Joiner’s goal was followed almost instantly with another at 60:21 by junior midfielder Daisuke Takanaka. This goal looked almost too good to be true.

Takanaka took a look at the open lane towards the net and kicked. The kick was strong and accurate.

Freshman forward Fernando Morales wrapped up the last ten minutes of the game with a final goal making the score 4-0.

He mentioned how there is always room for improvement and there were things that not only he could improve but all the athletes could.

The first half of the game had Senior midfielder Remses Atahualpa kicking due to a penalty. The kick was missed but allowed for attempted shots.

Atahualpa maintained communication throughout the game. This allowed for extra perspectives and opportunities.

The Mavericks had quicker passes throughout this game compared to the last home game. That allowed them to get further up the field with less distractions in between.

CMU was tight on the defensive side of things. SDM had a hard time moving up the field without losing the ball midway, and there was a lack of open shots for the Hardrockers.

Each athlete recovered fast and continued attacking, allowing for steals and attempted shots.

The Mavericks look to improve on their season as they take on Regis University on April 1 in Denver, Colo.
