Mavericks extend winning streak to 18 games

CMU allowed only one run total in the two wins against Regis and CSU-P in the first set of games of the RMAC POD Weekend.

The softball team had another great start to their weekend. Defeating both Regis and Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday in the RMAC POD Weekend.

The Mavericks first defeated Regis in five innings 13-0. Kaila Jacobi hit a 2 run home run in the first inning to make the score 4-0 with scoring AnnMarie Torres as well. Torres came through in the second inning with a 2 run home run herself scoring Kellie Mrofcza on the run down the right-field line.  

CMU was able to score seven runs in the first two innings. When it came to the third, the offense was able to score six more. Bailey Kleespies hit her second home run of the season to give the team an 8-0 lead. Alexa Samuels then stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and she was able to clear them with a grand slam to left field. Brooke Doumer, Torres and Mrofcza were all able to score on the big hit.

The pitching was also on a roll in this game as Kimbri Herring was able to throw another complete game and only allowing 2 hits against Regis. She struck out 5 of the nineteen batters that she faced. Herring got her 14th win of the season.  

The second game was against Colorado State-Pueblo was won by the Mavericks 4-1.  

McKenzie Surface earned the win for the Mavericks as she is now 14-0 on the season. Surface threw a CG and only allowed one run on four hits against the Thunderwolves. She struck out 8 of the batters that she faced.  

All the runs earned in this game came in the fourth inning from the Mavericks. Kleespies scored on a single from Sarah Staudle that also moved Jordan Hays up to third base. Hays and Staudle would both score that inning when Lauren Wedman hit a single up the middle. Doumer came up and hit a double to score Wedman.  

The Thunderwolves then got themselves up on the board at the last second when an RBI single was hit in the 7th to score the Thunderwolves first and only run.  The two wins on Saturday extends the Maverick’s winning streak to 18 games as their overall record improved to 33-6.

CMU will conclude their weekend by playing CSU-Pueblo at 10 am and Regis at 2 pm on Sunday at the CMU softball field.
