Mavericks end 0-3 at the Arizona Invitational

The Mavericks struggled to get anything going in the Arizona Invitational as they won two sets and lost 13.

The Mavericks drop their opening three matches in the Arizona Invitational as they lost 13 of their 15 sets over the weekend.

Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) first match was against Arizona University (UA) who is the number 13 team in the nation. The Mavericks had a tough time getting things going as they lost all five games.  

The Wildcat defense contained the Mavericks in every game as CMU’s highest point total was 13 in redshirt junior utility Magdelena Dabrowski and sophomore defender Macie Lachemann’s match.

CMU came close to beating Stephen F. Austin (SFA), but they fell 2-3 as they couldn’t win close games. The Lumberjacks duo of Iris Fletcher and Corin Evans got the final victory for SFA over sophomore utility Holly Schmidt and redshirt sophomore Maddi Foutz. 

Schmidt and Foutz won the first set 21-17, but Fletcher and Evans bounced back and won the next two sets to seal the match victory for the Lumberjacks.  

Dabrowski and Lachemann was the first Maverick pair to win against SFA. Junior defender Ara Norwood and junior blocker Ashton Reese got the second win for CMU as they won the final two sets. 

The final match of the Arizona Invitational was against Washington University (WU) and the Mavericks won one set against the Huskies as they got swept 0-5. The CMU duo of Norwood and Reese were the Mavericks to steal one win away from the Huskies.  

The Maverick’s next game is Wednesday, Mar. 18 at noon California State University-Northridge.
