Colorado Mesa University (CMU) controlled both ends of the floor as they won 78-28 in Chadron, Neb.
Chadron State College (CSC) turned the ball over 24 times as the Mavericks defensive pressure made them uncomfortable all game. CMU profited off the CSC turnovers, scoring 30 points off turnovers.
The Maverick’s three-point shooting in the first half helped them jump out to a 45-17 first-half lead as they were 50 percent from three. Senior forward Kelsey Siemons led CMU in three-pointers made as she was five for nine from behind the arc, scoring 17 points in the contest.
Senior guard Kylyn Rigsby led the Mavericks in scoring with 18 points, converting on seven of 16 shots from the floor.
The first quarter was controlled by the Mavericks as they jumped out to a 23-11 lead behind four three-pointers. The Maverick’s momentum continued as redshirt sophomore guard Natalie Bartle stole the ball and raced down the floor to convert the transition layup to end the quarter.
CMU’s hot streak from behind the arc, shooting four for eight as they outscored the Eagles 22-6 in the second quarter. The Mavericks had four different players make a three in the quarter.
Siemons was CMU’s leading scorer at halftime with 12 points as she was four for five from behind the arc.
The Maverick’s relentless defense was one of their keys to the first-half lead, as the Eagles were eight for 26 from the floor and committed 13 turnovers in the half.
CSC’s shooting struggles continued in the third quarter as well, shooting two for 16 and being outscored 4-19 in the third. The Mavericks defense continued to keep the pressure up as they allowed seven points in the fourth quarter, going on to win 78-28.
Senior guard Daniella Turner nearly had a double-double, scoring 16 points and adding nine rebounds in the contest. She was one of the four Mavericks that ended in double-figure scoring as they won the second game of their road trip.
CMU’s next game will be Friday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. against Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo.
