The Mavericks were able to stay undefeated at home as redshirt sophomore midfielder Mira Houck netted the only goal of the game to give her team the victory.
In a game decided by one goal, Colorado Mesa University (CMU) was able to find the back of the net as they played a solid defensive game that led them to the 1-0 victory.
Going into the game against a very competitive and physical Metro State University- Denver (MSUD) team, the Mavericks came in prepared knowing that they were going to have to play to the roadrunners style of play if they wanted a chance.
“It was a battle. We knew coming in that Metro was a really good team, they are really organized on the ball and they keep really good possession. so we were going to have to be really organized to find good pressure on the field,” Head Coach Megan Remec said.
Houck was able to find a pass from redshirt freshman midfielder Sophia Beames before getting the ball into the back of the net at the 21 minute mark.
“We’ve really had some trouble scoring off set pieces, so we have been practicing those extra.It all happened very quickly but luckily Sophia [Beames] was able to get a really good initial shot off,” Houck said.
For Houck, this game meant a lot to her because of the fact that her and Remec came to CMU from MSUD. Houck stated that because the Roadrunners were coming into town there definitely were some nerves but she knew that her teammates had her back.
The Mavericks were able to keep the pressure off of MSUD in the first half as they came close to scoring multiple times. The roadrunners took five shots in the first half, as the Mavericks were able to have majority of the possession in the opening 45 minutes.
Coming out of half time, CMU wanted to make sure that they put even more pressure on the Roadrunners so they did not find any momentum to gain control.
MSUD was able to have more possession in the second half as they were able to take 13 shots and try to find the equalizer. As much as the Roadrunners were trying to capitalize on the four fouls CMU drew in the last half they could not.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chloe Dody continued to excel as the Mavericks goalie. She had four saves for the Mavericks. She was able to give the Mavericks good opportunities offensively, as she sent the ball deep on her goal kicks.
The Mavericks have clinched a spot in the RMAC tournament after their final three road games of the season. They will finish out the season starting on the road against New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. on Oct. 29.
