Mavericks can’t handle Regis in first conference loss

Two first-half goals are too much for CMU to overcome in the first game of the four-game road trip.

Colorado Mesa University falls short with its first loss in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The Mavericks were unable to find offensive success which helped the Regis University Rangers finish the match with a 2-0 win.

CMU only had one total shot on goal in the first half allowing the Rangers to take the early lead as they scored both goals in the first 25 minutes of the match.

“I don’t think we were making the right decisions with the ball,” CMU Head Coach Andrew Conniff said, “We weren’t always the cleanest with our passing in terms of keeping it on the ground…”

The first goal of the afternoon came from the Ranger’s very own Pascal von Matthey in the 17th minute of the first half.

The Mavericks didn’t have an answer for the Rangers offense the entire match.

“Our intensity was wrong. We definitely got outworked on the day,” CMU Head Coach Conniff said.

The second and final goal of the day was actually an own goal by the Mavericks themselves boosting Regis University to a 2-0 lead within the first 25 minutes of the match.

“This was a really good team (Regis)” CMU Head Coach Andrew Conniff said, “I don’t think their record really reflects where they’re at…”

The Mavericks continued to struggle long into the second half and really couldn’t get anything going. The Rangers goaltender had three saves in the game to keep CMU off the scoreboard.

Colorado Mesa University will be on the road once again this Sunday to take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The match will kick off at 2:30 p.m.
