Making your internship invaluable

Success is determined by the work

Everyone spent their summer differently, whether they traveled, hung out with friends, worked or had an internship. Most internships are important stepping stones for jobs, or a way to gain important experience in a career field.  Therefore, every college student should try and experience one.

“I think it’s invaluable,” Professor Eric Sandstorm of Colorado Mesa University said. Internships are not limited to college students nor should they be. However there are certain majors on campus that require either an internship or a practicum, with mass communications being one.

If you are someone that is interested in learning, growing and networking, this article could jumpstart your journey.

As we go throughout our daily lives we wonder, ponder and question. What will I do for the rest of my life? Where do I see myself in five years? How much money will I make? What will people think?

These questions have the ability to stop us from taking any action. We get stuck in our own head. We start to believe that we won’t be able to reach our goals. We begin to think about what could or could not be. We worry too much about not having money and what people will think if we take an unpaid internship.

“I wish every internship paid, but these can be more valuable than money,” Sandstrom said.

It seems like a lot of people are afraid to take their first step towards a bigger and better life. They don’t want to be judged by their friends or family. But, successful people from all over would agree; it boils down to the time you spend on your goals and how hard you are working to reach them.

There has never been a success story of someone who hasn’t worked hard to get there, unless they were born into money. There will always be someone who is working twice as hard as you are right now and will get there before you. What will you do to change that?

Everyone, even successful people, have 24 hours in their day. They are the ones that spend their time giving back in ways that others. This could very well be what’s stopping some from achieving greatness.

It’s easier than most people think.

“Many students will say ‘the internship was more valuable than any class I took over four years’,” Sandstrom said. “Everyone seems to want it now. The ones that don’t, don’t succeed. It’s that simple. Internships are the best way to get you closer to your goals. They will help you in ways that are invaluable.”

Students should take their summer and work for a company that will get them closer to a career or a goal. If they sit back and think for a minute, they might ask: what’s the likelihood that they will have a job out of college without having real world experience?

Sure, you might have been involved in clubs or worked on campus, but that won’t turn into a career. The best way that you can have a career is if you are able to put yourself in front of a company that you want to work for. While you are there, do everything that you can to show them that you belong and will bring value to the company. College is the best time to experience what an internship has to offer. Remember to work hard and bring value to the other person. If you are able to do this, then there is no doubt that you will get a job.
