Linzey: Why you should vote

1782

For those of you that have been asking the question “Why should I vote?” I have an answer for you. Serving in the role of Student Body President for the past 2 years and serving in the organization for 3, I can absolutely vouch for the fact that the Associated Student Government truly represents you, the student.

This year alone, we allocated over $100,000 of your student fees to worthy student clubs and projects across campus. We funded the live mascot and the Rowdy Wranglers. We assisted in funding the Veteran Laptop Project allowing for veterans on campus to rent laptops. We have assisted in sending hundreds of students across the world to learn important information and represent CMU.

Additionally, the leaders of ASG, will sit down with President Foster this upcoming year to determine how much your student fees should increase or decrease. We are the voice for you.

We spend the student fees you give us. But more importantly, we represent the student voice to staff, faculty, administration, city and government officials, and local businesses. We are a part of weekly meetings with leaders across campus, representing the voice of you, the Maverick.

When sitting in Faculty Senate Meetings, meetings with Vice President John Marshall, or meetings with President Foster, who do you want sitting across from them offering “the pulse” of the students across campus?

Also on the ballot this year is a constitutional amendment that we hope will stand for years to come. We reallocated our seats so that each academic department has a voice on senate. We replaced our system for hearing and administering a judicial process in a fair and impartial manner. Most significantly however, we rewrote the constitution so that it allows us to better serve you, the students.

For the first time this year, we have also included an opportunity for students to pick a student made-design that will be created into a t-shirt through the bookstore and sold for an inexpensive cost. The money made from these t-shirt sales will put money into a fund made for fostering school spirit such as tailgates and other events.

You have a say in all of this. You choose who will represent you this upcoming school year to faculty, staff, administration and the community. You choose who will represent your department and your clubs. You choose who will determine how much our student fees will be for the next two years. You do all this by taking less than 5 minutes of your time to vote. Vote, if not for the candidates and other ballot items, vote for you and your fellow Mavericks.

Whether you disagree or agree with how things are now, go vote. Vote for the changes you want to see. If I haven’t said it enough please vote as soon as possible, as voting closes Friday at 5pm. We want your input, and as always, we thank you for being a Maverick.
