Lil Yachty brings larger audience than American Authors

Approximately 35 percent of student body attends Yachty

The Lil Yachty and Dizzy Wright spring concert last week had a substantial increase of student and community attendance over last year’s concert.

Amidst the controversy of Student Life’s choice of Lil Yachty, nearly half of the Colorado Mesa University student body was interested in attending.

According to the Director of Student Life Shane O’Neill, approximately 4,800 to 5,000 people attended the Lil Yachty concert.

“From our ticket sale records, we sold approximately 1,000 tickets to community members. Meaning we had about 3,800-4,000 students present,” O’Neill said. This means that approximately 35 percent of the CMU student body attended the Lil Yachty concert this past Saturday.

Media Relations Director Dana Nunn believed that Lil Yachty concert was an overall success.

“I think it was an excellent turnout,” Nunn said. “It’s important for students to remember that this is their school and these are their events.” 

Programs Activities Counsel (PAC) Chair, Melanie DiMinno, thought the same things about the concert. “The concert was a huge success,” DiMinno said. PAC is in charge of choosing the spring concert artist.

“We were happy with the number of students that attended! Especially since it seemed like there was such a large negative reaction when we first announced the headliner. We appreciate the support, and we look forward to future concerts,” DiMinno said.

Last year, CMU hosted the American Authors and 888 for the 2017 fall concert. Approximately 13 percent of the student body, 1,262 students, attended last year’s concert.
