On Apr. 30, 2019, Colorado Mesa University (CMU) welcomed the installation of the 1200 lb. Maverick statue in front of the Maverick Center on the east side of campus. The statue stands eight feet tall and twelve feet long, with extraordinary detail and a patina finish. Now nearly five months after the statue was installed, this statue remains nameless.

On the day of the installation, students participated in a formal reading, “What it Means to be a Maverick,” launching the initiative to name the new statue.

“Each student, visitor, donor and community supporter will have a different idea about what it means to be a Maverick. Starting today the whole CMU family has an opportunity to help us name this incredible work of art and powerful symbol in the community,” CMU President Tim Foster said.

Submissions to name the statue will be accepted through Sept. 1, and can be submitted by any student, alumni, or community member. To submit a name for consideration, participants should film a video, no longer than thirty seconds in length, in front of the statue, describing what it means to be a Maverick and their idea for a name.

As an alternative, participants can send in a 100-word written idea alongside a photo of themselves in front of the Maverick. Submissions can be sent through the following link: https://www.coloradomesa.edu/to-be-a-maverick/index.html

The name submissions will be presented to the Board of Trustees to be decided on. The person who submitted the selected name will be awarded with a yearlong pass to all CMU Athletic events and theater productions as well as a $100 giftcard to the Maverick Store.
