It’s okay to take a day off

As a college student, the number-one rule I have been told is to go to class. Each class is extremely expensive, and I have been told that if I miss one class, it is easy to fall into a spiral of never wanting to go again.

When I was a freshman, I had to constantly remind myself that missing one class could be dangerous for my motivation. But, as my experience as a college student is growing, my relationship with school is evolving as well.

It is important to remember that as a student, you are mainly here for school. So, in order to keep up with all the activities you do at school, you need to be a successful student first. School can definitely be overwhelming and burn-out is real. Since school can be extremely stressful, taking a day off to relax is important for your mental health.

It is easy to become overwhelmed by the classes you take and the assignments you have to keep up with. College classes are not easy, and it is important to put time and effort into your schoolwork. However, do not feel ashamed for taking a day to yourself to recharge or catch up on homework. You may feel guilty for skipping a day of classes, but when it is done in moderation a day off can be rewarding.

Additionally, it is said that you will retain more information if they experience less chronic stress. This is because stress affects the way memories are formed, and studying involves retaining information. Ways to reduce stress on a day off can include watching your favorite movie, eating comforting food, or trying your best to keep your thoughts organized by listening to music, drawing or creative writing.

My advice to students who struggle with school is to utilize all of the free resources on campus. Do not be afraid to attend your professors’ office hours, use the Tutorial Learning Center or spend time in the library and study with your peers.

It is important to fully engage yourself in your schoolwork and manage your time so you can feel good and have days to rest. Remember that taking a day off could be necessary and you should not punish yourself for doing so. Ultimately, your body and mind deserve proper rest and care to function. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
