The Mavericks did finish the weekend on a positive note, after another frustrating tie.
Colorado Mesa University men’s soccer extended their record to(10-4-3 with one tie and one win on the weekend. Game number one took place in Durango, CO against a strong Fort Lewis College team which resulted in their third tie of the year.
“This is the second time we’ve played (Fort Lewis) this year and the second time we’ve had a draw with them. There was a lot of opportunities both ways,” Head Coach Andrew Conniff said. “Our goalkeeper, Brendan Brown, was absolutely ridiculous again in that game. Some of the saves he made, no one else is making those. Offensively we had opportunities and we just didn’t quite make the most of them. “
The Mavericks continued to struggle with consistency and missed opportunities throughout the entirety of the weekend. This is the second time this season the Mavericks have seen Fort Lewis on the pitch and the second time they’ve left empty handed.
CMU ended the first game of the weekend with a total of 15 shots led by freshman Alec Fronapfel’s career high seven total shots.
Sunday CMU returned for their last regular season home game and celebrated their seniors with the 1-0 victory.
“That was one I think we could have blown it up two or three or four nil,” Conniff said. “Some of the chances we had early, if we finish them, I think the game goes a lot less stressful late.”
Adam State sits at the 11th spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) compared to CMU’s third place standing. Considering this, the Mavericks should have made this a statement game especially with the RMAC tournament up next.
The first and only goal of the match came from CMU’s Niall Shaffery on a cross assist by Ramses Atahualpa in the 56th minute.
Goalkeeper Brendan secured his sixth shutout of the season with a total of three saves on the day.
After Sunday’s victory the Mavericks improved to a 8-3-3 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) as well as secure a spot in the RMAC tournament.
Although CMU’s odd’s look bright throughout the tournament, perfection is what it’s going to take to prevail. The Mavericks have yet to play a perfect, well-rounded, match. Right when it seems like they’ve figured it out, the Mavericks quickly remind us of their imperfections.
Round One of the RMACA Tournament will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7 at Walker Field where the Mavericks will look for their first victory of the season against Fort Lewis.
