How to stay in shape over the holidays

Before I begin, let me say that if you are able to eat a lot of food over the holidays, remember how lucky you are and be grateful, because some do not have the same luxury. Anyways, if you’re like me, you are already bracing yourself for the inevitable- eating a crap ton of delicious food all winter long.

Eating is a part of the holiday culture, so don’t punish yourself and not eat any of the food grandma made, just be smart about it. I am going to share with you a few tips that I have learned throughout my six years of working in the fitness industry to try and combat that dreaded “holiday weight” but while still enjoying all of the holiday food.

  • Portion control: When you’re full, you’re full! End of story. This is the most common and easiest way to gain weight. Don’t eat that extra roll just because it’s right in front of your face, have self control.
  • Eat that pumpkin pie, but hold the whip cream: Making simple decisions like this could save you in the long run. Just remember, it all adds up in the end.
  • Make small changes: Make wheat rolls instead of honey rolls; substitute margarine for olive oil butter; make homemade food instead of buying frozen food; etc.
  • Turkey not ham: Both are pretty lean meats, but turkey is healthier in a lot of ways; lower calories, lower sodium, lower fats.
  • Don’t forget about the veggies: Don’t lie, you try and avoid the veggies too. Vegetables are so important and we don’t eat enough!
  • Balance: Your body needs carbohydrates, protein and fat to survive. Make sure your plate is filled with all three. My mom always said, “The more colors you have on your plate the better.” Be sure to have a wide variety of food so that you are not just eating all carbs. Remember, too much of anything is not good.
  • Give that toast: Alcohol seems to always be a part of family holiday gatherings (How else are you supposed to handle crazy Aunt Pam?), but drink with modesty. Did you know that for every beer or alcoholic drink you consume is equal to about an hour of cardio to burn it off? Maybe save the drinking just for special occasions.
  • Go workout: If you don’t already workout, now is the time. Winter is the perfect time to get out of shape because you can no longer do as many activities outside and because of all of the holiday food. This is a recipe for disaster.
  • Cardio: Don’t just go lift weights, do cardio! Normally I would never say one is more important than the other, because they are both equally important (ladies, I’m talking to you) but if you do not want to get a belly over break, then cardio is your best friend.

Well, there you have it. Have a wonderful and safe thanksgiving break. Remember to just be mindful of what you are putting into your body and workout and you will be okay.
