You heard it right; the bells aren’t working

Why the "bells" have been wonky all semester

This semester, the “bells” of the University Center clock tower have been malfunctioning. They’re not actually bells at all, but a digital version called carillons, which were added later on after the clock tower had already been built. After winter break, the clock wasn’t sounding at all, and even now, it only does sometimes.

Since the system is completely digital, the problem is purely technology troubleshooting. IT is unsure at this time of what the problem is.

“The director of IT, Institutional Technology, did go over this very day and take a look to see what was going on with the system,” said Director of Media Relations Dana Nunn. “It does sound like it’s working sporadically, but not consistently. They are reaching out to the company from which we purchased the carillons seven years ago.”

The clock is designed to chime on the hour and also to play music from a playlist of about 3,000 songs starting seven minutes before noon and stopping at noon. This feature has also been absent this semester so far.

“There is a problem and we’re working to get it resolved,” Nunn said.
