Group exercise classes are an added benefit for gym members at Hamilton Recreation Center Hamilton Recreation (Rec) Center on Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) Campus. The Rec Center offers group exercise (GroupX) classes at no cost for registered students, faculty and staff.

During the academic semester, 30 to 40 classes are held Monday through Saturday. Starting as early as 6:15 a.m. with Rise & Shine yoga, classes are held throughout the day until 7 p.m. Functional and cross-training classes, strength and TRX suspension training and Pilates are some of the classes currently offered.

“I’ve taken Zumba, yoga and cycling,” Freshman and business administration major, Noelle Paiement, said. “I think my favorite [class] is definitely Zumba. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of dancing. It’s not an intimidating situation at all. Everyone is really welcoming, and it is all beginner levels. Whatever level you’re at, you’re able to participate.”

Classes run anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes. Weekly and semester schedules are posted on CMU’s website, along with the Campus Rec app and their Instagram page.

“My favorite part about teaching in GroupX [classes] is definitely seeing how excited people are when they find a new modality of exercise,” cardio kickboxing instructor, Rochelle Gudder, said. “What I notice [while] being on stage and looking at everyone is that people don’t really look at each other. They mainly focus on themselves and their own workout. I see zero judgement going on.”

GroupX classes are a way to explore innovative workout routines. If there is a class that members want to see taught but don’t see on the programs list, they can request the new class. Students also have the ability to teach classes.

“My favorite [class] is Vinyasa flow yoga,” Junior business entrepreneurship major, Jackson Engstrom said. “It’s both challenging and relaxing at the same time.”

Individuals interested in GroupX classes can download the CMU Campus Rec app to stay updated with classes, as well as wellness programs, sporting events, Rec Center hours of operation and more.

“The nice thing is [students] don’t have to pay for the [GroupX] classes,” Sophomore business marketing major, Cameron Walters, said. “Just take advantage of that.”
