When you stop and look at how many sports many talented athletes this school has, it is hard to stop and think of only one that deserves the title of Male Athlete of the Year.
The Colorado Mesa University baseball team has been unstoppable for years. The hitting has been on fire and the pitchers are practically untouchable. The team lost some talented arms after last season due to seniors graduating, however, they picked up new talent in the freshman. But one acquisition, and probably the biggest one of all, came in form of transfer pitcher Garrett Hutson.
Hutson has been a staple in the Maverick starting rotation this season posting an 2.56 era Opposing teams are putting up a batting average of only .192 against the right handed pitcher. He has put up a stellar record of 10-1 on the season including one of those being in the RMAC tournament.
His senior season has been nothing but excellent and the Mavericks are not the only ones who have recognized that. The El Dorado native was named RMAC Pitcher of the Year. Hutson was also named RMAC Pitcher of the Week and the NCBWA South Central Region Pitcher of the Week for a start against Fresno Pacific early in the season.
“Hutson is super competitive. He’s an extremely hard worker and there is a ton of confidence for our team when he’s on the mound. Every time he has the ball,” Outfielder Hunter Douglas said. “We know we have the chance to win. It’s fun to play behind. He’s an easy guy to compete for.”
Hutson has been one of the favorites to watch this year because he simply great at what he does. His execution of every pitch is flawless and his passion and love is carried out along with it. Hutson is one of the most consistent pitchers that the Mavericks have on their staff.
Along with all of the hustle comes a whole lot of heart.
The way that Hutson carries himself, whether he is on top of the mound or when he is standing in the dugout, you can see how much love, passion, and drive he has for the game. You can tell from the stands that he is always rooting on the rest of the team. His passion for the game shows in his commitment.
Because of the characteristics he shows on and off the field…. Hutson is deserving to call Male Athlete of the Year.
