The 2018 All-RMAC Teams for men’s soccer were announced earlier Tuesday morning. Seniors Kevin Del Mazo, James McGhee, and Briley Guarneri earned All-RMAC First Team honors. Junior Lawan Abary joined the trio on the First-Team. Peter Vandam and Matthew Miller were honorable mentions.
Abary led the Mavericks with 13 goals in his first season with CMU. The leading scorer also registered one assist for a team-leading 27 points. His 13 goals and 27 points were both second in the RMAC. The 6’4 dynamic forward gave the Mavericks another dimension they have not seen for years. His presence created multiple opportunities for CMU in every contest.
Del Mazo capped off a historic regular season career with his second straight First-Team selection. The CMU career assists leader with 26 ended the regular season with seven goals and eight assists, good for 22 points and second on the team. His eight assists led the Mavericks and were second best in the RMAC. His speed and dynamic ball skills were pivotal in several Maverick wins.
McGhee helped anchor a stonewall defense for CMU that limited opposing offenses to a .107 shooting percentage. The defenseman also chipped in five goals and two assists in an all-around great season. McGhee seemed to always be near the ball defensively, stifling opposing team’s offensive momentum with nifty plays.
Guarneri, who was named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, lived up to the billing and nabbed his first RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year Award, becoming just the second Maverick to earn the honor and the first since 2013. The senior was named to All-RMAC the past three seasons but this is his first year on the First-Team.
Guarneri played in 15 games and finished with 45 saves, a .750 save percentage, and three shutouts. Guarneri also etched his name into the CMU record books, recording his 50th victory earlier in the year, and is now up to 52, the most in Maverick history.
Peter Vandam’s electric and up-tempo play earned him an Honorable Mention. The midfielder started all 17 games for CMU and record one goal and one assist. His play contributed heavily to several Maverick victories as his all-out nature sparked CMU defensively and offensively.
Miller enjoyed another fine season that earned him his second straight Honorable Mention selection. The senior finished with two goals and seven assists. The seven assists placed him fourth in the RMAC. Miller was a key component for the Mavericks and dished assists all season long.
