On Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., Sherry Winn visited Colorado Mesa University for a presentation arranged by CMU’s business and athletics departments.

Winn, a two-time Olympian and national championship basketball coach, now tours the country as a motivational speaker, as well as promoting her books.

During her presentation at CMU, which was targeted primarily toward athletes and business students, Winn placed an emphasis on discussing the mindsets necessary for a person to find success. She started out by saying, “If you’re going to be an athlete, if you’re going to be a success in business, you have to have enthusiasm.”

Interspersing Winn’s advice with personal anecdotes from her time as a coach and Olympian, she then moved on to discuss the role that personal happiness plays in success.

“Happiness is essential to success,” said Winn. She used herself as an example of someone whose success was initially hindered by an unwillingness to accept happiness. She argued that instead of searching for reasons to not do something, one should instead internalize why it is worth doing.

Winn ended her presentation by talking about priorities. She argued that in order to find success in a discipline, it is necessary to make it one’s priority. “The first thing you should do every day is get to your priority,” Winn said.
