The ever-changing tuition at CMU

Can it actually be a good thing?

Every year at Colorado Mesa University, the tuition cost changes. This fluctuation can be frustrating for many students. CMU is growing rapidly. It seems like a new building comes up every six months. CMU pays for the new additions by changing student tuition.

I like the fact that our tuition is changing every year. I want CMU to advance. This school deserves to abound; CMU has so much potential. Doesn’t everyone love our brand new health science building, or how greek life is growing? Wouldn’t it be great to have more parking areas? That’s why our tuition is changing every year.

The CMU20000 movement may help both the Grand Junction community and CMU in several ways when it comes to economic growth. More businesses around the school will become more popular and there will be more students attending CMU.

On the other hand, some universities take the approach of fixed tuition, like University of Colorado. This term means once a student starts at CU, they will always pay the same tuition until they graduate.

In theory, that approach sounds great, but in reality, CMU is not at that point yet. CU is already a huge school. They have been around for way longer than CMU. CU doesn’t need to be spending millions a year for new buildings, professors, etc. CMU needs to spend their money right now to make our campus life better. The administration wants future students to get excited about coming to a smaller school.

I believe we have the prettiest campus in Colorado; it’s one of the main reasons why I choose to be a part of CMU. It’s so cool to attend a school that’s up and coming. CMU keeps me on my toes. I always ask myself, “What will CMU be 20 years from now?” I get so excited to know that CMU and Grand Junction will be the top place to see and attend.

CMU did that for this community; President Tim Foster and Vice President John Marshall did it for us. They created a closer society in a short amount of time. It all started five years ago when we changed from Mesa State College to Colorado Mesa University.

So, the question is, do you want our school to continue to change? Or, do you like it the way it is now and you want to keep your tuition the same every year? I strongly believe that our school isn’t expensive now compared to other big universities. I don’t think we should have fixed tuition for another 10 years or more. I want to see a bigger football stadium, our school switch from D2 to D1 and 20,000 students in the coming years.

In the many years to come, CMU will get there. Maybe they won’t ever be perfect, but by having our tuition change every year, CMU could become closer to perfect.
