With the start of the Fall 2022 semester, Colorado Mesa University (CMU) welcomes back returning students and new members of the MAVliy, kicking off the semester with New MAVdays and Welcome Week events.

New MAVdays is an admissions event for incoming first-year students, transfer students and international students to learn about campus, get to know those who help run the university and provide an opportunity to get to know other first-year students.

“I’d say it’s a great way to meet new students and connect with them. [MAVdays is] building community from all around campus and just becoming familiar with different spots on campus and faces on campus and feel like this is now your home,” Admissions Director Melissa Tolson said.

Friday night is the Kick-Off event where students will hear a personal welcome from University President John Marshall in the Brownson Arena at 5 pm.

After the Kick-Off, Mavs are welcome to celebrate attending CMU in The Plaza with an Ice Cream DJ party. All of the ice cream will be provided by Enstrom’s, a local chocolate shop.

Saturday the 20th is filled with events from the Club Fair in the Elm Quad at 1 p.m. and the Donuts and Consent seminar at 8 am at the Fireside Lounge by Starbucks. There will also be some new student education and information sessions.

The freshmen will be required to attend three different sessions to be educated on campus rules, safety, and other general student resources. There will also be sessions for freshmen parents on financial, first-generation, and transition help.

After the class work is over, the jam-packed weekend ends with Campus-wide Mesa MAVness Carnival & Dinner.

“Out by the plaza, Alumni Field and rec center, we’re having, essentially a carnival. We’ve got a bouncy castle, dunk tanks, popcorn, and snow cones. Opening up campus and just have fun and going around and giving freshmen time to get to know their new home,” Tolson said.

Though, just because the weekend is over doesn’t mean the party stops. In conjunction with the start of classes on August 22nd, Welcome Week will be hosted by the Programming Activities Council (PAC).

On the first day of school, August 22nd, a Meet your MAVliy (Maverick family) BBQ will be held. It goes from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the plaza outside of the University Center and offers a chance to meet other first-year students and upperclassmen.

Events on Tuesday the 23rd will give Mavs a chance to get creative with CD and vinyl painting at 5 p.m. on the University Center’s south patio. Each student gets to choose between a CD or vinyl record to decorate with the provided paint, a way for freshmen or upperclassmen to decorate their new living quarters and another chance to meet new friends.

On Wednesday the 24th, there will be a supplies giveaway for the final event on Friday with Glow Party Grab Bags, on the south patio at 1 p.m.

These bags will have many goodies, including glow sticks, glow body paint, and more to get your glow on for the party Friday the 25th.

Thursday, Mavericks are encouraged to walk downtown to the Market on Main, a local farmer’s market to spread some school pride. Wear any CMU shirt or school colors including MAVroon and yellow to show you are part of the MAVliy.

The Glow Party starts at 8 p.m. at the Grand Mesa Field, located directly outside the Grand Mesa dorms and on the back side of the library. Come dressed in Neon and glow sticks for the after-dark party. All students are welcome!

It’s a week packed with informational seminars, BBQs, and even ice cream. Students are highly encouraged to attend the events. Remember to have fun and welcome back Mavericks!
