International cuisine has been continuously diversifying in Grand Junction with the recent opening of Euromart, an Eastern European grocery store–adding a touch of Europe to the local community.
Euromart specializes in European chocolates, snacks, bread, meats and frozen foods. From pierogies to German bread, Euromart carries a variety of food items that come from all over Europe.
As the only European specialty store in Grand Junction, owner Agata Dziwisz is elated to share a taste of her own culture with Grand Junction.
Agata Dziwisz came to the United States from Poland with her husband in 2003, at the age of 23. After moving many times throughout Colorado, they finally settled in Grand Junction, where they felt that something was missing.
Dziwisz explained the closest European store was in Denver and emphasized, “that it was too far, especially in the winter.”
Regardless, for many years, they would buckle down for the trip to Denver to enjoy their favorite foods. It wasn’t until last year that Dziwisz thought about opening the store.
The main inspiration behind Euromart came from a recent trip to Poland in 2022, where her husband and kids spent three weeks there for her niece’s wedding.
“Every day, I would talk to [our] kids. They were so happy and excited about all kinds of Polish and European foods,” said Dziwisz. “They were eating pierogi, sausages, fresh rye bread, kaiser rolls, drinking fruit nectars and eating a variety of dairy products every day. They never had enough!”
After returning to Colorado, she thought it was worth a shot to open her own gourmet European store in Grand Junction. After lots of research and talking with suppliers, wholesalers and truckers, opening the store was more than feasible, and Dzwisz was ready to begin.
“Finding the right location was a challenge in the current market, but I feel like we got lucky and got the one on North Avenue. The area that we chose makes me happy,” said Dziwisz.
Euromart’s mission is to provide unique and delicious European products that you can’t find anywhere at the local grocery stores. Euromart imports goods all the way from Europe, while also transporting fresh and authentic products from European bakeries and delis across Colorado.
Even though Euromart is in its beginnings, as it just opened up on Nov. 28 of last year, Dziwisz strives to continually improve her storefront by providing English labels on all of her products, and for those that need extra explanation, she is always happy to help.
In the future, Dziwisz has many hopes for the store, especially to open a deli section with cold cuts. For now, Euromart stands as the only specialty European market in Mesa County.
Euromart is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Their storefront is located at 1059 North Ave.
